About Me

Hello there! My name is Randy Luttrell and I'm a visual effects compositor located in the pacific northwest.

As a kid, I would make movies with an old VHS camera and utilize things like a strobe light, a water hose, and a boombox with prerecorded sound clips of thunder to create unique shots. I was astounded that I could make something that looked like a real stormy and rainy scene, while in reality it was a nice summer night. I suppose this was the start of my passion to bring different elements together to create imaginary worlds and situations. AKA...movie magic!

Fast forward many years later to my college days and I all but forgot about my passion to make movies.... While first attending Washington State University – Vancouver, in pursuit of my bachelors degree, I decided to ease into the school by taking the "fun" classes first. This led me to their Digital Technology and Culture program. After taking multiple 3D animation and audio/video classes, my passion for creating visual entertainment was re-ignited. I realized there was an actual career path I could take to create movie magic. That's when I discovered the magical world of digital compositing.

I've always been a huge fan of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy and was amazed at how they could bring a completely CG Gollum into live action footage and it looked so real. So for one of my final projects in a 3D animation class, I asked if I could test the waters by putting a 3D character into some live action footage that I shot. My professor was happy to let me try to use a live action background instead of the original assignment, which called for a 3D modeled character and a 3D modeled background. This sent me down a path of learning different concepts such as camera tracking and set fitting and to try to be the bridge were 3D meets live action. While it wasn't perfect, this is the assignment led me to specifically wanting to be a digital compositor. Having a more clear picture of what I wanted to do, I decided to continue my compositing training and enrolled at The Academy of Art University. I completed my Master of Arts degree in Animation and Visual Effects with a focus on compositing, taking all my classes remotely from Washington state.

After College, I started to do different freelance gigs, including business explainer videos, industrial visualizations, and adding visual effects to other projects. I also had the pleasure of working on creating multiple animated scenes that spanned over 4 different screens that were used as "windows" for an escape room called "Jurassic Tours" at the PNW Escape Experience. After this I was brought on as a Nuke Compositor at Refuge VFX were I really learned to work in a pipeline with other artists and departments. I also gained experience working on different shows and movies for network television and streaming platforms. Some of my favorite shows I got to work on over the years were: Space Force, The Peripheral, SEE, Superman and Lois, West World, Another Life, The Underground Railroad, and Cowboy Bebop.

I'm excited to continue to learn and grow as a visual effects compositor. I feel really blessed that I get to work with such talented people and artists and get to be a part of what originally inspired me as a kid...to create movie magic!
